Built by the Emperor Justinian when Istanbul was known as Constantinople, this magnificent example of Byzantine architecture boasts a massive dome, a lengthy nave, and an interior decorated with marble, precious stones, and pillars from Ephesus. Later, we will drive along the City Walls of Constantinopolis to the district of Edirnekapi. The 5th-century city walls built by Emperor Theodosius II stretch for 6.5 km (4 miles) from the Golden Horn to the Sea of Marmara. After lunch in a local restaurant, we will test our bargaining skills at the Grand Bazaar, the largest and the oldest covered market in the world with more than 4,000 shops. It was built between 353 and 350 BC in Halicarnassus, present day Bodrum, for Mausolus, an Anatolian king. It stood above the city for 16 centuries, until a series of earthquakes shattered the columns and today only the foundation remains. From here we make our way to Bodrum Castle and its Museum of Underwater Archeology. The castle is a historical foundation built from 1402 onwards by the Knights of St. John. In 1962 the Turkish Government decided to turn it into a museum for the underwater discoveries of ancient shipwrecks in the Aegean Sea. After this enriching tour, we will transfer to the pier and board our gullet for a cruise along the spectacular coast of Bodrum and lunch. We will enjoy a relaxing afternoon onboard our gullet with swim stops at spectacular bays. We will return to the pier and transfer to our hotel for an evening at leisure.
